Hallo! My name is Johann, I just joined to this group and I am looking for some constructive critique to better my headshots. I became very inspired by the Dylan Patrick cinematic headshot and I try to reach the similar results but with the different equipment.
Hi Johann. Stunning examples of your work. They are gorgeous!!!
Can you share more about your equipment and how it differs from what Dylan uses?
middle one the best! :)
Thank you Chris and Jack!
The difference was in equipment. I used canon 5D Mark II Body with EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM at f5,6 and EF85mm f/1,8 USM at f/2.2. My reflector is a little bigger as by Dulan. Flashes: Yongnuo 568EX II and Canon 430 both with yongnuo 622 trigger. The Octabox is the same as by Dylan, by the way i love the softness of this light modifier!!!
Hey again Johann, I'm not seeing a massive difference in the gear you're using. Yes, it's a more budget conscious setup, but it seems you still have an octobox as a key light, a reflector for fill under the chin, and a kicker, right? At the end of the day light is light, and it doesn't matter if you have a Yongnuo, a Canon, a Nikon...for Dylan's approach the high speed sync capability seems to be the one vital ingredient, and if you are happy using an ND filter you could even use non HSS strobes for you lights. So while I applaud you for not using the best (expensive) gear, I think your equipment is essentially the same in concept. Yeah?
FWIW, I like the look of the middle image marginally more than the other two, except for the bright lights coming out of the left side. I find that quite distracting. In the other two images I find the eye shaped dark area on the horizon to be a distraction. Finding that right background seems to be a challenge with Dylan's method.
Keep up the good work.
Hi Johann. Nice work. I'm definitely drawn to the middle image. The background is much more subtle than in the other two shots which keeps my eye on the subject instead of being pull away to the bright areas in the first and third shots. Great light in the eye. I actually like the bright flare to the left - the value balances with the light from the kicker to the right.
Would love to see more from you.
cheers
I love the middle image, as well. The lighting on her face seems a bit more "pure" than the top and the bottom, although they're both still REALLY good. The way that the bokeh effect is brought out in the second image's background while the rim on her shoulders creates a separation between her and the background... I love it.
hI Johann..is it a clamshell lightning?one octabox and one reflector for fill in..love the portraits
Hey Johann! I'm sorry I'm playing catchup! I've been a bit MIA here lately. Beautiful work and great lighting, I also applaud you for using what you got for gear! Expression wise the top two are my favorites, great lighting in all of them, the bottom I might have just gotten closer and framed her up a little more camera left. The night shot is also a great start, it's a very tricky shot and ultimately one that can be very hard to consistently nail. In the tutorial we showed how for you can push it but ideally you want to shoot this 15-30min after the sun has gone down while there is still some ambient failing light in the sky and when the city lights or whatever you are using start to become visible. This will give the image greater dynamic range, more color, and a little more mood. This way it isn't just black with nice orbs of light you will have some moody ambient coming through as well. Really nice work on the whole and looking forward to seeing more!
