yeah, i misunderstood you a bit :) You are right - different design wold be better and i'm going to re-build my project - i'm thinking of two rings of bulbs. it should add more options for distance/angle to achieve this and maybe more interesting look.
Shadows/skin - yo are right again. A little underexposure wold add more drama.
