Location feedback

Hi guys

Sorry for all the posts, but it's nice and helpfull with all your feedback!

I took this photo before I received my Lee Big Stopper, so I used a cheap ND filter for this photo. It's by far not one of my greatest. The reason for the post is your thoughts of the location and the object in the photo. It's a location that I'm able to visit often so I'm planning to shoot here again and therefore it would be nice with some feedback to take along for next time.

Cheers!

It's hard to tell from the web-size image but it looks like shoreline in front of the rock formation was where the lens was focused, leaving the rock a bit soft. The location is lovely and I really do like that formation. A few suggestions I might offer would be to use the natural slant of the rock to point into your frame in such a way that it doesn't end, crossing your vertical centerline. It creates an imbalance and compositional tension that is uncomfortable to the viewer. I've attached a crop as an example of the change I'm suggesting. The change is subtle while the effect is not. Since your rock is taking up so little of the composition, you're telling me a story about a rock that rests in beautiful surroundings (Single subject with an environment that contributes to its value). By placing the rock at the lower left intersection of 3rds -keeping the rock from passing center- it allows the rock and surrounding scenery to play nice together. The rock is still the subject due to its position and contrast but the background is helping to make it more interesting to the viewer. If the rock took up the greater portion of the composition, you'd be telling me a story about an interesting rock (strong, single subject). Next time you're there, maybe try both ways to shoot it. Hope that at least gets some creative juices flowing.

Perfect! I really like your feedback and next time I'll try both of your suggestions and see how it works out.
I took this photo with a Samyang 24mm with manual focus. I tried to get it as sharp as I could. Next time I'll use my Canon 17-40mm lens and see if I can get a better result.
The ISO is rather high as well, which migh make some of the edges a bit soft.

Thanks again!
