Cows in a blizzard

Hi folks. I'm using this winter to really explore more personal work (read: non-weddings) so I took a stroll in a snow storm yesterday to see what would happen. I stumbled across a little herd of belted galloways in a forest and just felt like I struck a bit of gold. I'm NOT a nature/wildlife/landscape photographer, but I'm pretty enthusiastic about the process of just getting out there and making opportunities for growth. I'm pretty happy with this photo, the animals just placed themselves beautifully, and I love the way snow effects contrast. CC welcome, et cetera.

Really cool shot! Love the slightly dark mood to it. I've never tried myself, but with a flash you could have poped the snowflakes in the image, which would maybe add another element to the shot. But yeah, when do you carry a flash for a landscape shot (;

Thanks Patrick! Its looking like more snow for me at some point this week, and I'm planning something with some strobes to do just what you mentioned. I'm hoping for some snow tomorrow, but my flash trigger bit the dust and if my replacemrbt doesn't come today I'll have to wait until Saturday's storm. When it will be 2 degrees out. :0

Graham,
The foreground being a large bright area steels my eye from the cows and forest, and all the little twigs are a distraction Might think about dealing with that (Grad ND on that area??) to keep the eye on the cattle. Love the moody forest background.

Great advice Michael. I originally tried cropping the shot to a 2x3 to knock out the foreground, but it just didn't feel right. Per your input, I dropped it down by about a third of a stop in LR and dodged the snow on the cows' backs just a little bit to bring the eye towards the center. I might eventually take the time to clone out a third or so of the plants.

yep. now the brightest area in the trees pulls the eye through the cattle. Seems better to me.
