Jeremy Lavender's picture

2 second exposure in the Rainforest

Went for a short hike today and have been wanting to get this shot. Looking for some CC.

For my own CC I'd like to have a longer exposure. This was shot without an ND filter (left the holder at home, whoops) so next time I go back, I will be sure that is in the bag. Thanks in advance!

I'm looking on a crappy screen so I'm not going to critique the photo. I've got some advice though if you find yourself in a similar situation. put your camera into a continuous shooting mode and fire off around 30 exposures. You can then stack them in photoshop into a smart object and merge them all together to create a simulated long exposure (in this case it would have been a 60 second exposure).

That's a different approach for sure, I feel like that is a bit more work via post than this image required. What advantage would this technique have over long exposure with an ND filter?

Basically what Mike said, but in this case I was referring to your situation where you had left your filter holder at home. I've also been known to very, very carefully hold the filter in place because I've forgotten a holder, adapter ring etc

I actually did try to hold the filter by hand, but it just was not working out this time. Thankfully this is pretty close to my apartment so its not a far hike to try again :)

Hi Jeremy,
The technique Paul describes helps out a bunch when focusing with an ND is a challenge or if you run the risk of moving the camera getting the ND in place after focusing. For your shot I think the waterfall is great. A 2 second exposure is plenty long with fast water. I like having just a bit of water detail left. The foreground water is slower so a longer time might smooth that a bit more but my eye goes to the white waterfall not the slower water. I would recommend getting some foreground element in addition to the large rock (or on top of the large rock?). Something native to that area would be nice, or a photographer maybe? I think there is room to get in closer if you can. The trees at the top aren't adding much so there is room to play there. Thanks for sharing.
Best...Mike

Thank you for a bit more of an explanation! I will give that a try next time for sure. Space is pretty scarce in this area, so fitting another photog in the frame would be difficult! I will try and 1) take a wider angle shot to try to capture more of the scene, 2) try another angle, tighter in on the water fall itself, and 3) try getting something more in the foreground.
As for the trees at the top of the frame, I was more trying to get the bridge in the shot than the trees. Thank you again Mike for the advice and suggestions!

Nice pic.

Nice Picture. I think the exposure looks fine, even without using an ND filter. The water looks nice and smooth to me. The only thing which bothers me is the foreground. There is nothing bust wasted space on the bottom right, If possible I would try to get a bit closer to the falls, or just angle the camera upwards and get more of those awesome trees to get a better feel of the surrounding environment. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all the suggestions and kind words. I've got a few others of this area I may post later. Thank you all again.
