After spotting this lake from the sky on a flight from Graaff-Reinet back to Cape Town I knew I just had to find it and see what it looks like from ground level. The mountains looked like it could make for a good landscape photo from the sky, but then again you never know what it really looks like until you are actually there. I sent the picture I took from the airplane window to a fellow landscape-photographer friend of mine and he managed to eventually find the lake...The mountains were glorious and had unique characteristics, but it was barren and lifeless due to very little rain. We decided to go back a month of two later and struck it lucky one morning after pitching a tent on the shored of the dam. Clouds prevented most of the morning light to break through but some rain fell during the night and all of a sudden these once-barren mountains got some colour. I took this photo moments before a park ranger chased us away for illegally camping in a nature reserve. We had no idea...but I got the shot I wanted.
