Tom Manning's picture

Portland Headlight

Hey everyone, I'm super new here but would love some feedback on this photo. I love seeing such dynamic works in this group, and am glad I found this site. Thanks!

Hi Tom,

Nice pic and great location. I like the composition, starting from the foreground. It leads the viewer's eye counterclockwise from the bottom left of the picture all the way to the rocks beyond the lighthouse. Please keep in mind that feedback about a photograph is very subjective, and every photographer has his or her own way of rendering a picture. Your processing has both warm (pink/orange clouds) as well as cool (blue sky, blue water, green foliage) colours in the frame. Perhaps giving the cooler areas a warmer feel would enhance the image. I would also clone out the specks (the rock or boat at extreme left on the horizon and the bird just above the tree line). My 2 cents.

Thank you so much Siddhartha, that's truly helpful, and I hadn't even noticed that rock/ boat so you have a great eye! I'll try to play with the processing more. Thanks again!

Hi Tom,
I like your composition and the mood of the picture.
Also I can fully agree with Siddhartha that feedback on pictures is always subjective.
In my perspective I would dodge the foreground and the dark stones middle right of the image a bit and enhance the local contrast in this area since it is very dark and hard to see details.
Overall I think that it would have been great to have some more sunlight on the lighthouse. If you have the possibility to visit this place again, I would love to see a picture 30 minutes earlier.
Cheers
Sascha

Sascha, thank you as well for your great feedback. I agree the rocks are a bit ugly, something about the splash tunneled me to keep them haha. When I go back I'll definitely go earlier, and try out some different comps. Thanks again so much!
