The Milky Way

Hi everyone,

I thought of starting a thread for Milky Way shots on this group. I wasn't able to find a search feature on this group to see if this has already been done before (although I'm pretty sure it has). I did find numerous topics on the Milky Way on the Fstoppers site itself.

I would like to invite fellow members to post their Milky Way shots and to exchange thoughts and ideas. I also invite comments on the picture I've posted to start things off. Thanks.

The Milky Way over the Drang Drung Glacier, Ladakh, India
This photo was taken at 14,400 feet on a bitterly cold Himalayan night in a stiff wind that penetrated my outer jacket and fleece and chilled me to the bone. The light in the tent was provided by a willing companion. I wanted the glacier to look as if it were spilling out of the tongue of the Milky Way and I hope I managed to achieve the effect.

Hey, this photograph got selected for Fstopper's featured photo of the day on Instagram today! I'm over the moon! Thanks, Ryan and Fstoppers!

Congrats! Here is my contribution. Tallgrass Prairie, KS https://fstoppers.com/photo/181411

Great shot!

You guys are good. I am still dreaming of my first shot of the milky way.

Thank you for your kind words, my friend. Don't dream, just go out and shoot. My first Milky Way shot wasn't anything great. But I felt elated that I actually managed to capture it. It gets better with time and practice, I promise. Google places close to where you live that have low light pollution, go out on a moonless night and start shooting. Get the technical bit sorted out first in camera, after which you can concentrate on composition and post-processing.

This is a great forum for tutorials, tips and the sharing of ideas, so don't feel inhibited about asking for help and guidance about everything from camera settings and lenses to framing, composition and post-processing to help you get that compelling Milky Way shot. I look forward to seeing a picture from you. Good luck!

Sid

Unfortunately, I stay in Singapore and there is too much light pollution and never a night without clouds. I can only hope to catch such opportunity when I travel overseas on holidays.

Nevertheless, thanks for your advice and I will keep getting my inspiration from all your photos. Keep them coming!

Great shots! I will contribute one of my Milkyway shots from Rocky Mountain NP in Colorado.
I was able to capture the silhouette of some trees and the mountain range in the distance. Although being high in the Rockies it was a rather warm night. I was wearing shorts and a short sleeve shirt at 3:30 am when I took this.

Love it! Great shot! Wouldn't have been the same without the trees.

Good one, Shintaro. Was the foreground lit or did you do some light painting? Where was this one taken?

There was a flood light to the left of the plane from the warehouse nearby lighting up the grass. The plane was light painted to balance out the bright flood light. It's in Kansas.

Ok, thanks.

Congrats! I will contribute one of my Milkyway shots from Italy, the Monviso (3841m)

Beautiful work, Mattia. Everything came together in this picture. Great Milky Way, great reflection, jagged peaks, still water, pretty foreground.

I'm just curious, but is this a composite of two shots? I'm asking because of the light on the mountains.
