I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with where you were going with this image. I might crop the right side and sky out a bit to have the coast line lead your eye up to your friend. I took a shot similar a few years ago that shows an example.
Also for a black and white, it's not as striking as I'd typically want from a photo.
