Collin Riley's picture

Is there too much going on here?

Do you think that this type of scene could benefit from a simpler composition? I was a bit tight on time so I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked but I can get back here fairly easily so I'd love some thoughts on what to try next time.

As someone who has never shot an area like this but has seen the likes of Elia Locardi's images and Steve Liks, I find theirs are much more simpler yes. But I don't mean it by anything complicated, they have a noticeable dead centre composition and also use the lack of light but also the harshness of light to there advantage. I think maybe bringing more contrast/lowering shadows in the shadows would benefit this image greatly. Still, a beautiful image.

Thanks, I never really thought of bringing the shadows down since I wanted to get the detail from them, but I'll thry it out!

If you had a ghost in the canyon you would get a lot of money for the picture. Just joking.

If you got to Upper Antelope Canyon on Summer or any season with the Sun right up to Zenith(11 oclock till 3 oclock) you will get the Light beam.
In that case you will need bracketing, I prefer bracketing 7 or 9. But you need fast lens and fast card cause you need time to get every corner!

Slot canyons seem to be funny places to photograph as there aren’t really any bad shots but getting a great one seems very hard. What about just cropping in a bit or dodging and burning to draw attention to what you want ?
