The way we improve is to try different techniques. I like to approach every image independently and not stick to a set formula. Every picture needs the best editing approach based on the situation at the time. Anyway...I like the more monotone approach you took with the colors. The foreground looks great with the sharpness and heavy contrast. I would probably lower the contrast in the sky a bit so the focus is centered squarely on the lower part of the image. You have a strong comp in the lower part and the sky keeps pulling my eye up when it should just complement the image. I'm a fan of panos so cropping the sky down a bit more could give you a nice wide image. Great shot!
Like Peter I'd crop quite a bit - from the top as far as 2/3 off the sky above the building on the left and from the bottom to just below the large boulder on the left in fact.
I'd also clone out the ghost figures on the right and also a few of the dust bunnies, especially if I were going to print it.
I'm not averse to monotone images in any way, but here I don't find the treatment actually adds to the image. The colour gives a feeling of cold, but the stance of the figure doesn't - so when I look at this image I personally keep wanting to bring it back to a classic neutral monochrome... which I'm sure is a journey you've already been on!
Yes, I like that - for me a much better balance and story-telling. You're right to leave the footprints in the sand in the picture too.

I really like this image! Im personally a big fan of moody editing :).
It looks like you have some haloing on the man - Im guessing you brushed up the exposure? May want to check your edges and see if you can get them perfect so you don't have the bright ring.
