Stars and Lightning

I took this shot on a beach in Turkey this weekend and i would love to get some feedback from you guys, also in terms of post processing.

I'm quite new to astrophotography and just try whenever i get the chance. I know that the foreground is a bit (or very) boring, i put a model in some other shots but not in this one and i find the lightning much more interesting than a model.

It was the darkest place i could find in a large area, unfortunately there were 2 beach clubs left and right causing some pollution.
Over the sea there was storm brewing and i was lucky enough to get one of the lightnings right under the Milky Way that just started rising. Then my luck turned bad and instead of a full grown storm the lightning went away, but the clouds rolled in covering the sky 15 minutes after i took the photo.

Let me know what you think :)

Cool capture! What are you shooting on? Generally I could care less what a photo was taken with but when it comes to astro, it actually matters for signal/noise ratio.

I think when it comes to Astro my gear is far from optimal. A D5500 with a Tamron 10-24 f3.5-f4.5.

I'm thinking about getting a 12mm 2.8 prime if i pursue it further, but I'm not sure if it will make that much difference with the D5500s small sensor.

There isn't any harm in learning and pushing your current gear to the limits. I think with what you posted, outside of image quality, the best improvements you can make is a foreground subject and possibly less blue in your image. Although take that blue adjustment with a grain of salt because I've got an edit that most astro photographers would hate the color on.

Also if you want to shoot more astro, grab one of the manual rokinon/samyang 14mms. That's what the above was shot on, can't get better than that for the cost.

Thank you Alex, I'll check them out and see what my photo budget can spare this year.

Regarding the blue/white balance, i wanted to sky to be a bit more dark and i think i overdid it a little. I played around with it a bit more since then, but it ended up being to purple.

Really cool picture. What did you do in terms of Post Processing? It looks like you took the temperature down and the tint up to get that overall blue and purple tone. ? I think it looks cool, but for my personal preference I might not go so far on the tint.

Yea i cooled down the white balance but i actually didn't touch the tint. I felt it became too greenish when I did. Maybe i should play around with the hue of the blue a bit.

I also did some dodge and burn on the milky way itself.

I tweaked the white balance a bit more in the meantime and warmed it up a little more.

Thanks for sharing. I haven't put much effort into night shots because I live in Atlanta, but I am definitely inspired by some of the posts on here!

I like it as it is Maximillian. Great shot.
