Using an iPhone to try out compositions before setting up...

Went for a quick "photo hike" before work late last week. It had been foggy on the hills above home and I know of a great little stand of old oaks with lots of potential for moody shots when the fog is in.

When ever I walk around looking for compositions I usually start by taking out my iPhone and use it to see if I like the framing etc. then get out my GX8 for the "real" shot. I did that for this pic which I liked for the depth the fog created in the stand of skinny twisted oaks and madrone. But it was the first shot I'd noticed so I didn't get out my camera & tripod and instead moved on, certain there were more interesting images around. Well nothing else worked out and by the time I got back to this spot the fog had burned off. Lesson learned, sometimes the best shot of the day is the first shot of the day! Will return later this week as the fog is still thick most mornings, but not sure I'll get the backlighting I was seeing here.

It's a good idea to use an iPhone or camera off tripod to try out compositions, but be ready to recognize when you have a shot you really want to work on!

Nice!

Lovely shot David - I have also fallen foul to not taking the shot straight away.

Thanks. Yeah, I've done it a few times now. But the opposite happens as well, when you stop for the first ok shot and spend too much time that when you finally see a better composition nearby the conditions have changed. So, hard to avoid either way I guess!
