walter siefker's picture

A storm was rolling into Honolulu the other afternoon, and the sunset lit up the clouds perfectly

I'm very new to photography and even newer to photo-editing; this is the one of the first pictures I feel truly proud of, and am excited about! I would love any critiques you guys have to give on it, and just really wanted to share this with you guys!

Great shot! I think the sky is phenomenal. The foreground is a little too dark for me - would love to see the shadows pulled up to see how much detail you can get back. I think there is some haloing around a few of the buildings as well. The lights at the bottom right are a little distracting, but bringing up the shadows in the foreground might even them out a bit and take care of that problem too. Again, great work! Just some ideas to try in post.

I tried pulling out the buildings but, like I said with joseph, it kind of made the clouds lose a bit of their dramatic flair, and I felt like it flattened the image a bit. Is there a way to combat that, and bring the darks out without losing the drama in the clouds?

totally agree with Josh...I am a cloud porn freak and definitely jealous of this shot. as a painter we look all over for the to happen so we can get a shot for reference material. when your out don't rely on a single shot take multiple and different stops so you get multiple exposures for instances like this when you get a foreground/background under/over exposed then you can save it in post

I tried bringing out the shadows in the buildings a bit in lightroom but it ended up taking a lot of the drama out of the clouds, and this shot caught me off guard so i didn't have my tripod with me at the time; Do you know of any way I could bring the buildings out without washing out the bottom of the frame, and dulling out the clouds?

send me the file and ill let you know if it can be fixed ....do you have photoshop or just LR

Incredible clouds Walter. Thanks for sharing.Josh and Joseph make some good points.I would probably just crop out all the dark skyline etc. With sunsets and clouds like thisI thinks its best to have a thin layer of black at the bottom just to frame the shot.
