Photo Critique

Hi Everyone, I’m new here. I’ve been into photography ever since I was young, but have now in recent years become more interested in it. I’ve never had any critiques of my work from professionals, but mostly just friends and family. I figured this would be a great place to get an honest critique of my work.

This shot was taken in Maine on a rocky beach, the whole time there was an immense sea fog that made it nearly impossible to photograph landscapes. I found myself challenging myself to be more creative and look for things I usually would not have shot. I came across this rock teetering on the edge of this smaller rock into the ocean. I used a Canon 7D, with a 13 Stop ND filter to get a 70-second exposure.

Please let me know your thoughts, and if you would have approached this scene differently. Also, let me know your opinion of the overall image quality and processing techniques.

I'm not a professional, but I'll happily give you my two cents worth!

I like the overall scene and composition. I find myself using the same techniques of abstract/bw/long exposure to deal with bad light near home as well. The two rocks are really intriguing and anchor the otherwise soft feel of the blurred ocean. I might have edited it for more contrast and boosted clarity a bit. I think the horizon needs to be leveled a bit as well.

It would be interesting to see how the image looked at other intervals, especially short long-exposures that might show more movement and blur in the water. Also, returning at a different time when the light is lower and hitting the rock from the side more. I'm curious if there is a time when the rocks shadow is cast out over the water more.

I like the composition and choice to go with a black and white long exposure.
Just be careful with the processing, there is quite a distinct halo around the rock, possibly from when you raised the shadows.
Other than that, I like it a lot!

An intriguing composition Daniel.
You did well to "look outside the square" as they say to find something of interest.A visionary person usually can do this without too much trouble. The Philosophers and Religious people would find much symbolism here. Photography aside I think it is begging for someone to give it a title or maybe some text for a book cover. Maybe some people here could offer a suggestion.Photographically it is well done I think. It may have been interesting to see it at a faster shutter speed.

im a fan of minimal i like the composition my only negatives are its crooked and lower your blacks also watch your cropping i would go a little bit higher above the rock maybe an inch
