Thorsten Westheider's picture

First Light

Got up early to shoot some woodland at golden hour and messed up completely, because I couldn't for the love of cookies find a good composition while the sun was climbing higher and higher. Then I found this spot and was intrigued with the shadows these little mounds cast and decided to take a shot. It's certainly not an award winning picture, but it saved the day.

PS: You can say about Facebook what you want, but at least they don't blur images to oblivion like this site does, at least for me.

nice starburst. i love when somebody can catch the breaks of light and retain shadow areas you've done a nice job here. 4* Thorsten

Thanks Joseph! Shame the sun was so high already, complete mess-up on my part.

lol should have skipped breakfast

Haha touché!

I AGREE!! The resolution on this site is poor! Nice pic!

Wonderful light. A really nice little scene, lots of atmosphere!

Personally, facebook's file compression is way worse. Almost all of my photos there look out of focus because of the compression, haha.

Thanks Jordan! It's weird, on my PC the picture looks way sharper on FB than here on fstoppers, on my laptop they are about the same.

Yes having the discipline to scout a composition first and predicting the outcome when conditions r what u want is key. Because u get sometimes only 10 minutes to shoot. This is my biggest problem but have come round to the fact it is a necessary part of the process to get a fantastic shot. With the above shot i think the magic is in the bottom right hand corner.

Yes, exactly. Thing is, I thought I had a composition (I've shot it before), but for some reason it didn't work that morning, so I was running hither and thither like a scared chicken until I finally found a completely different (and unknown) spot.

And yes, you're right the magic is in these little mounds that sort of look like waves on the forest floor.

Interesting analogy with waves. There had been a blog and discussion on the website about what is art and i think art is more than taking a photograph it has an extra element of feeling and interest.
