Long lens landscape

I very rarely attempt landscape unless I see a shot while I am out shooting wildlife. I have huge respect for those that do landscape. People say nature takes a lot of time and effort, it does but nowhere near that the good landscape togs put in. Waiting for light, location selection, getting up at silly o’ clock is all a bit beyond me.

Here is one of those shots taken simply due to opportunity. I was out with the 7D2 and 100-400II shooting red kites on a local hill. The light below was nice an mottled so Without changing settings I grabbed a few shots before getting back to the kites. I was quite pleased with this one when I got home.

As ever C&C appreciated. Landscape is an area I really struggle with.

Your vantage point seems to be a bit higher up than normal as I would have tried to place something in the foreground (land mass) as well as some other element in the background. The nice thing about this image is the shadows of the clouds overhead. Currently the image appears to be more of an abstract photograph than a true landscape. Lower your angle or approach to the field and include other elements, just don't crowd the image. In other words, if this picture was on displayed in a gallery, it would be overwhelmed by the green color without any breaks. The best way to put this, is how I take these kinds of shots.. squint your eyes and you'll see that the image simply runs together.

Thanks. It was a grab shot from the top of the hill I was shooting birds from. Always good to hear thoughts on shots. Thanks for the advice. I do intend to challenge myself with more landscapes these coming months.

For this type of shots, try to get inspiration from people shooting the Palouse hills in the North West of the US, or in the hills of Tuscany. You should find plenty of shots on 500px. Sidelight and a vantage point that's above the hills you're shooting but not too much is usually what people want for these shots.

I don't have any criticism of this Phill. I think it's just great. If I was there I think I would have done exactly the same. Not that I am a great landscape photographer. Just an allrounder.

A really nice, abstract shot. I love the composition, and the shadows are a really nice touch. I think you could play around with it a little more in post to see if you can make it a little more dynamic, if that makes sense. Overall, a nice one for a quick shot.

This shot reminds me of a Japanese photographer Toshiki Nakanishi.

Thanks for you comments and the name drop at the end. Just been looking and really enjoying it.
