Took a day trip to Linnville Falls in the mountains of North Carolina. I was a little late for the "peak" fall colors but it was still a spectacular view. Any and all comments are welcomed.
Hi Kyle. looks like a great location. For me the falls are too far away in the picture and the tree on the right gives the scene a lop sided look.So does the shift of the clouds towards the right.Others may have more constructive iideas than me. I like your gallery. You have some great shots there.
I am extremely familiar with this location. It is one of the first places I photographed as a young kid, and I went back many times. Erwins view gives a nice view of the surrounding landscape but doesn't do the falls justice, do to the fact that the viewpoint is getting rather old and the trees are larger than many years ago, and are now obstructing the intended view a little bit. If your main focus wants to be the falls, Plunge Bain offers an incredible location to capture the size and power of the falls. I agree with Geoff that the right side feels heavy because of the large tree. Attempt using a longer focal length, and shoot early to mid morning with a soft light. You were thinking properly with the fall colors, and just because the colors are past peak, doesn't mean good images aren't to be had.
Thank you for your comments. I agree with just about everything both of you said. I might try cropping it in a bit
and see what that looks like, but honestly I think the tree frames the scene quite nicely. I agree the falls are kind of far away but I was going for capturing the whole scene not just the falls. I didn't have time to do both trails and after doing some research I decided Erwin's view is the one I wanted to get. The view definitely doesn't do the fall justice but like I said I was going for more of the entire scene and the fall colors which, I could be wrong, but I don't think you can get much of the color from the bottom? I'm about 3 1/2 hours away so getting there for sunrise probably isn't going to happen. So I just had to deal with the light that I had. Definitely looking forward to going back sometime. I left the falls to try and get "the shot" of the Lincove Viaduct at sunset but I couldn't find the spot! The sunset was kind of disappointing anyway. Like I said, definitely want to go back to both locations and next time I might go for the "Plunge" to get a better shot of the falls. Thanks again!
