Ian Fraser's picture

Dumbo

I am finally getting around to reediting some shots from June. I was in NYC for a few days and got to get a couple of old standards.

i like this shot Ian good color balance nice starbursts wish the sky gave you a bit more punch but thats about it

Thanks Joseph.
It was a weird sky that day. the clouds were moving a lot and cleared almost completely by evening. I would have loved to have been able to get some more drama from the sky but, that will have to wait for the next trip.

Hi Ian,
Two things for me:
It seems the photography is not really verticale.
cars are so too present, notably the one with lights on.
Hope my feeling to be useful.
David

thanks for the feedback, David.
The shot was taken in portrait, I waited here for hours but unfortunately With it being NYC, there was never a moment without a lot of light pollution from cars. I tried to get several shots to overlay together but the constant traffic made it very difficult to keep my composition.

Hopefully the next chance I get to visit the city again I can have another go.

First of all the image title is very misleading as it has nothing to do with the elephant.. Second, what draws me to this image is the green tower* in the middle of this picture.. thus the image should be cropped removing the vehicles and positioned off center either left or right of the green tower/steeple. Then report back with these adjustments. FYI: In preparation for the new camera, I've scouted several location around Baltimore that's easily accessible. One in particular is a dimly lit street similar to this shot. The big draw, is there's zero cars with a lesser bridge. I'm hoping to mimic your shot very soon.

This neighborhood is called DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). Second, the green "town" is actually the Empire State building.

As Chris said, This is a very famous location in Brooklyn and it is impossible to get a cleanshot without cars or people in it. It was a challenge just to get this shot due to all the cars driving on the street and all the other photographers and tourists having a go at a landmark location. If the cars are cropped out then the whole flow of the image is destroyed. That would cut out the leading line, the flow of light, and the drama of the city from the image. I wish that the car would have turned off its light but I guess that the driver really wanted to keep their parking space and never turned the light off the two hours i was there. If you get the chance I do suggest you have a go and photograph DUMBO and at Brooklyn Pier. Its a short walk and has some good challenges with crowds.

Thanks for the follow up Ian, as the one above was not so pleasant. Therefore I'll not be returning to the Fstoppers site as many of you continue to offer "edited" "unreal" or enhanced images which I'll not take part in offering a critique.

Yeah, I see a lot of images that are so shopped that I have a hard time calling them photographs.
As for unpleasant comments, I try to contribute Kindness to everything. Some people (myself included) have a hard time with expressing themselves with positive verbiage in text. I have found most people on here to be very insightful and genuine.

Where ever you go, take care and good luck.

Seeing how Fstoppers isn't allowing me to delete my account, *phhfftt" I guess I'll hang around for a while.. but don't expect me to respond to "fake" or "enhanced" or "mis-titled" photographs.. as I could careless what the abbreviation meant.. the mere fact that it was titled "dumbo" suggested that the photographer was calling himself a dumbo for taking that shot or one could have expected Dumbo flying around in the background of this image.. If you're going to do it.. do it right and don't mis-title the image. leaving yourself open to a critique calls for more than you've bargained for. Just another reason you'll never see any of my images here, because it is what it is, and doesn't need to be changed or edited. Think about it.. Ansel Adams never used post editing.. Though I'll admit he did use filters to achieve greatness.
