Thoughts or Suggestions

Hey all, I'm looking for some feedback on my most recent portfolio addition, as I didn't get crap for engagement on my original post. Any thoughts or suggestions on this one? Thanks to all commenters in advance.

Its a beautiful image. Lovely colors i find it hard to conceive the completely clear sky with fog on the top of the hill. However the highlights are nice and subtle which is lovely. Even if this is the correct horizon i would straighten it.

Thank you Loretta. The clouds just hanging around the peaks is actually quite common around here. Yeah I'm not sure about the horizon either. It's technically straight, but it looks off to me as well. Thank you!

Kudos for avoiding the usual spot to shoot the Buachaille :)

I can conceive that a better composition might be possible there. The nicely lit waterfall in the immediate foreground feels half in, half out of the image. It looks like there may be a little rooster tail just below the edge of the frame that you could have used as a focal point. By contrast, the middle third of the image with the small waterfall in the exact centre is not well lit and feels a bit like wasted space to me.

I think perhaps if you moved back and down a bit you could have used the foreground space more effectively by concentrating on the first waterfall. Of course, I don't know if that would have been possible at the time.

Nice work

Thank you David. Yeah I started out at the usual spot, but I actually didn't like the stnadard composition very much.

There is a bit more of the foreground waterfall, although not very much. You can't really get it in frame completely though. It is possible to go back and down as you suggested, and I tried that the night before when I was testing possible composition. For me that created a couple of problems though.
When going lower, you lose parts of the river in the midground, which is problematic especially on the right side, as that little stream aove the right foreground rock just creates a bit of blue seperation between the rocks, that otherwise kind of merge into one unidentifyable blob. Another reason was that going lower, while making the immediate waterfall look a bit better, resulted in two elements fighting with each other, rather than one leading into the other.

This is really tough to explain. It probably sounds like I'm just trying to defend my composition, but I really appreciate your input. I agree that it looks a bit like I chopped of the foreground waterfall, that's not ideal. Perhaps going lower would have been the better call.

Alright, essay over, thanks for taking the time David.

Not at all Lukas, very clear! One thing I can't stand is when people just say 'oh you should do this...' without even considering whether or not that's an option!

PS give me a shout it you're ever over Aviemore way - always fun to meet other photographers :)

I'll defenitely do! Also let me know if you're ever around Fort William, I know a couple of nice spots around Ben Nevis :)

Like it a lot! I think the waterfalls in the mid ground might make for a more interesting foreground. Might be worth a shot, anyway, nice work!

Thanks John. I went with this waterfall for the shaped curve, and because I knew the sun would hit it in the morning. The waterfall in the midground had flat light on it all day unfortunately. Thanks again for your feedback.
