Yellowstone, Grand Prismatic springs

Our last visit to Yellowstone was fantastic with gorgeous weather and beautiful light. One of my favorite photos of this trip is the Grand Prismatic Springs with steam rising and the people silhouettes in front of it. C&C welcome:

I like the use of the people for scale and as a subject. I think this was a good opportunity to use a longer focal length, as the foreground isn't adding anything to the photo here. I think if you had been able to zoom in closer, and just focus on the people with the steam, and the mountain in the background, it could have been a more balanced photo.

You might be able to achieve the same look by simply cropping this photo, so i'd recommend giving that a shot!

I hope that helps.

Thank you. You are right, however I did not want to lose the blue sky. A vertical format might be another option with more crop showing sky and people. Will try that.

Yeah, I was thinking a vertical. That way if you want the sky, you can still keep it, it will give the photo some nice layers as well.

I agree with Jordan. But if you keep the sky desaturate it a bit.

I do think the colour saturation is a bit too much - with the high contrast of the image it looks a bit garish. A nice scene to capture though.

You are right, I did go overboard with Saturation. :)

Nicely done and it brings back good memories of when I was in Yellowstone a couple of years ago.
I also waited on a lot of my shots until there were strategically placed people to add a sense of scale and maybe even a splash of colour to an otherwise monochrome scene.
Nice composition, but as others have said it is a bit over saturated.
