Need feedback on composition

Hi everyone,

I am fairly new to Fstoppers online community. I am also relatively new to photography having only just taken it up in earnest last year. I would really like some feedback from some experienced photographers on my composition specifically, but any constructive feedback is much appreciated.

Thanks

I think your composition is good. And my critique maybe totally off here but 1. Try different white balance, i too get lots of blue but r messing around with wb to make my images pop. 2. This is totally subjective but i think shutter too slow. Perhaps water not too silky. 3. I love i think it would be boring without the clouds. But that with the colors u caputure is lovely. 4 composition is good. Watch for the filtered light on the near rocks that takes your eye away. Your seem to have composition down for a new photographer u def have an eye

Thank you Loretta!

Hey there,
1- Very nice scene but a subject in the foreground would probably help the eyes lead to the nice background diagonals.
2 - For me a bit too spot on center, love the exposure thought. Maybe something vertical down to the rocks with some focus stacking, try to isolate one rock and have the water leading lines back to the waterfall. Maybe try a shorter exposure to keep some details in the water....I myself always got the max ND too :-)
3- Very similar as in -1...nice leading lines in the bg but lacking of subject/interest in the fg.
4- The first 2/3 top to bottom are good...the last 1/3 is empty :-(
All and all my critiques are all heading in the same direction....foreground....Hope this helps :-)

Thank you, I will try to look for better/more interesting foreground elements.

I agree on the comments re shutter speed. I love long exposures but I find that too long, especially for waterfalls, and you loose all sense of texture and motion. Try a variety of speeds when shooting water and see how they differ and what you like best. A technique to try when you get more experience with post processing is to blend a short and long exposure of waterfalls for that silky effect while also adding back in some texture.

At the ocean really long exposures can work really well especially of larger areas and I think yours looks fine. For now I'd suggest you focus on better (or just different) compositions for places you visit. Add more foreground, look at some of the 'rules' of composition (3rds, leading lines etc) and don't be afraid to zoom and capture less of a given scene. The top image with the peak in the background could have been zoomed in to ficus on the just the horizontal composition of the valley sides, water and the peak at the top. Keep it up!

Thank You

Hey there! So the main image that grabs me is the last one at the beach and here is why. You have a lit foreground and then a line from the rock formations that take your eyes out to the beach. You did a good job of not including too much of the sky which looks like it didnt have much color going on. I personally like to use/have lines coming out of the corners of my frame. One thing I dont see you using is the rule of thirds. Its nice to have a foreground displaced in the lower right or lower left third and have your final subject on the opposite upper third. This will create tension between the two subjects and really make viewers look all around. Centering your subject is great for certain shots but mostly leaves a viewer wanting that tension I just spoke about. Your other images are nice but I feel that nothing pulls me in as much as your last shot. Let me know if I can help further and keep shooting man!

Daniel

Thanks appreciate the tips!
