Andrzej Muzaj's picture

At the Eyjafjallajökull's Feet

At first I didn't consider this image worth post-processing. It grew on me for months and just recently, few days ago, I stumbled upon it again, while culling through my images again. This time, however, I had a clear vision of what I wanted to achieve and convey with this picture. It all was there, sitting in front of me. I just couldn't see it until just now.

As always - I'm happy to hear your thoughts. Especially on toning the image. In one frame I have almost three different landscapes - harsh sun, clouded shade and rain/fog - at the same time. It was quite a challenge to get everything in place. If you have any suggestions on this - don't hesitate. :)

Cool rainbow!

It photobombed the picture out of the blue ;D

thats some badassery Andrzej i like this a ton there is always a way that someone else will look at this and put their own spin on it but it has everything in my checklist ...drama, color, depth and grand presence
here's my take on it

Thanks Joseph! I see your edit is slightly more dark and contrasty than mine. It seems to work, too. On the other hand, I'm working on quite dark monitor so it's already pretty dark when I see it. But I like it - I think I might do some small adjustments for LCD devices, especially mobile phones and tablets (as they're usually slightly brighter than laptops and a whole lot brighter than prints). :)

like i said its a matter of preference at a certain point and every artists eye likes a slightly different thing i am a moody person and i love extremes so i tend to like that sort of image but i am super jealous of your work and where you are able to capture such great images one of these days ill get out of the flat east coast hahaha

btw i increased the warmth at bottom increased the blue on the top and hit up the curves to darken in 3 different layers then erased the darker layers to pull the bright spots of interest back out

Sure thing, I totally understand. :)

I'm trying to incorporate "less is more" rule so I ended up desaturating blues and yellows a little across the entire frame, so they won't become much of distraction. And deep shadows are also my concern - especially around the rainbow and the waterfall part. I wanted them to have some details, as they are not in the harsh shadow but in the cloud shade.

Anyway - giving that image this kind of look took quite a few different contrast layers (with luminosity masks) and then some other color grading layers as well. Somehow, I managed to do it in two days only. It's a breeze compared to some images I can't finish in months. :P

hahaha i know the feeling

I like this shot and won't do much to it postproccesingwise. Nice color, tones, light, contrast. The only thing I would do is to emphasize the "little" waterfall/stream leading to the "rainbow".

Hm... I already did some contrast / tonal enhancements to make it pop and I was afraid if it's not too much already. But I'll try this and see what will come of it. Thanks Jens! :)

PS. why the quotes around the "rainbow"? :D

Quotes only because I cannot recognize a bow like shape. It looks more like a patch of prism light.

Now I get it. :) Yeah, it was quite bizzare spectacle there. If you look closely to the line of waterfall you'll see a very faint color going up to the cloud. But the most prominent part of it was this super-sayan rainball. (did I just make a new word? :D )
