Long or short exposure

Hi all,

I'm really in between the two shots here. Long or short exposure? I like the dynamics of the waves of the short exposure but also like the relaxing calmness of the silky long exposure. Which do you prefer? Any thoughs on the images? What can be improved?

Thanks a lot,
Jens

Hi Jens,

They're both very nice shots. Keep up the good work!
The long exposure radiates more silence.
Personally I would prefer the short exposure, because the waves create tension. That's why it looks more interesting to me.
There is a building on the island, which seems a little blurred to me. (Maybe it is also due to the compression of the website) You could sharpen it a little in my opinion.

Kind regards,
Jonas

Thanks Jonas for your opinion. I will check out the chapel. It should be in focus. May be blurred because of the perspective correction.

Indeed they're both nice. Great subject, lines and perspective. Profound difference between the two. The top one is serene and surreal, while the bottom is active and dynamic. At first glance I preferred the top one, but the longer I look the more I like the bottom one.

Thanks Dune. I have to admit, I think the same.

Hi Jens,

to me the bridge and the path up to the building are the main subject. I feel like the leading lines are a bit weak, i. e. maybe the shot needs a little tweak in the composition (don't know whether you could get higher above and more to the left). So, I find the water in the short exposure distracting whereas the smooth water in the long exposure adds to the leading lines.

Maybe an upside down graduated ND filter for the bottom half of the picture would help to get the exposure right on the island as well as on the bridge. Maybe this would be a candidate for HDR.

Keep shooting,
Wolfgang

Thank you very much for the detailed crititcs. The composition was relatively obvious. There were some other spots (a bit higher and 20 metres backwards) but unaccessible or unallowed.

It is already a blend of two exposures.

For me no question that the short exposure is more attractive. Feels much more textured and there is much more variation in tone and colour. Beautiful shot :)

Thanks David. True, there is more detail and variation.

I typically like smooth water, but I actually like the texture in the second shot. That being said, the first photo does have a kind of magical look to it, so I could go either way.

Thanks Jordan. Yes, both have their advantages and disadvantages. That doesn't nake it easier for me ;-) I will keep both for sure. But to decide which may make it into my portfolio: hard to say.

Yeah, I've definitely been in that situation before, two equally good photos but I'm not sure which one I like better, haha.

how about the best of both worlds a blend i took your full detail shot and then put the long exposure on top at 35%.....basically just softens the aggressive details and keeps all the colors nice shot/ shots by the way

Thanks Joseph for your efforts. It takes a bit of the cripsyness of the water but fits well into the frame.

Short exposure looks more alive! Love both!
