Kevin Teerlynck's picture

this is Belgium! - CC always welcome.

Last weekend we went out to shoot the sunrise at a local nature reserve in the north of Belgium. The weather conditions weren't very promising, but after finding some good compositions we decided to stay put and wait for the sun to rise. At that moment off course it started pouring rain and the wind kept increasing... :)
A brief moment we thought about going back to the car, but eventually we embraced the rain and waited until this break in the clouds moved into our composition.
Magnificent to see those clouds being backlit by the already risen sun and impressive how many different colors were casted in the scene! It turned out to be a satisfying morning shoot after all ;)

Exposure blend of 2 images shot at 14mm.

HI Kevin, great capture! My shortest critique is here...
2 good things and one thing I wish for..
1) Good sky with lots of dynamics... light and cloud
2) Good composition, with leading lines in the grass, trees forming a triangle and converging towards bright light/sun
3) I wish, there was more details and light in the foreground (bottom right corner) as well as in the trees and sky. I am sure you can bring that up in post... off course if thats what you want.

Thanks a lot for your feedback Parag. Great to hear your opinion. And i can follow you in point 3, i captured enough details in the shadows but intentionally developed my image a little darker. Kind of like this more dramatic atmosphere. :)
Regards

Thanks Kevin for sharing and congrats. Tgis is a great shot. Is this at high fenn (Hautes Fagnes)?

The color in the sky is awesome. Very nice detailed foreground. The only thing that bothers me is the tree on the right that is cut off.

Hello Jens, thanks a lot for your insights. Happy you like it. This actually is in the north of Belgium, but the high fens actually offer a similar landscape

The sky looks cool but I'm not sure it helps your image compositionally. You have really pleasant elements throughout the image, yet my eye immediately gravitates towards the blown out part of the sky. I think a less intense sky would compliment the rest of this photo better.

Thanks a lot Francisco. It is true that the opening in the clouds demands a lot of attention. The brightest part always does actually. I could indeed try to balance the light a bit more, but i believe i'll lose some of the drama then, don't you think?

Well thats really subjective. Personally I think a muted sky would accompany the rest of the shot better, and it seems like a good candidate for messing around with sky replacements. I guess the blown out part of the sky is bothering me too much.

I took a look at your other work, and your Chiesetta Alpina and Lake Bled skies are in the realm of what im referring to as a more muted sky. Great work.

To me this seems like a shot where you should be able to enjoy all of the textures going on, and I think an "epic" sky kind of takes away from that. Your Lake Bled shot for example, lets me enjoy all of the textures without being overwhelmed by one element. Great shot either way.
