New Year Wandering

Happy New Year to everyone :)

Starting 2019 off in the traditional way by taking my camera out for a long walk, heading into Glen Eannich in the Cairngorms National Park. It's a long and spectacular glen but can be tricky to shoot. But when it's good, it's amazing!

Not exactly amazing conditions today though for the dramatic landscapes I was hoping for as the light was pretty flat, and although it's winter there's a profound lack of snow here in Scotland at the moment which always helps to transform a scene.

So I did what I could using the river to turn work the steely greyness of the scene to my advantage. I was not particularly hopeful when I got back to the laptop to see how these turned out but in the end I quite like this though I admit the composition is pretty uninspired. However it's got my appetite whetted and I think I'll plan for some overnight trips in the area before too long so I can really work it properly. Feedback welcome as always :)

great idea to use the river on a not so awesome day. the mountain and clouds help..my only negatives are 2 lens may be dirty with a water droplet and the overexposure in the sky. i love the area and would love to visit one day your so lucky to have this in your back yard. i gave you a sample of where the water mark or smudge is you might be able to photoshop it out

Thanks for your remarks Joseph. Yeah I had a wee look at that smudge when I processed it but I'm not that invested in this shot and could not be bothered doing anything about that or the sky on the first time around :)

i know you'll kill it on the next go around

That kind of weather is great, don't be fooled! The 2 types of weather to avoid out in the open are 1) clear skies 2) uniformly overcast skies. Dark clouds, on the other hand, make for great drama, also worth trying long exposure (10 seconds or thereabouts) if there's wind and then checking if you can create leading lines from the cloud trails.
