The Re-Edited Photo

Ever go out and take a shot, and be so excited to process it that you rush back to the laptop and begin blasting through the edit in order to make that perfect photo and post it up to your website, social media, etc...?

What if you just waited a week or so? Let the excitement of the shoot digest, scan all the images you made from that spot, start coming up with a plan on how best to edit it, and then take that plan and deliberately process the image. Which one do you think you'd be happier with?

This image from Manarola is a perfect example. I was thrilled about the image I'd captured after watching the scene through golden hour, sunset, blue hour, and full dark (even though its a cliché composition), and had a "finished" image before my head hit the pillow that night. Fast forward 2yrs later and truth be told, I was never that happy with how it turned out (its since been deleted). I began examining all the files from that location, and seeing which ones worked best together in order to create a time-blend of this scene. Im much happier with this image, and feel its more balanced than the later/darker/blown highlight version of my original take on this scene.

Share your re-edits and let me know what you did differently the second time around!

Hey Chris, what a wonderful take on this classic image. The time blend works really well, bringing out the best in all major elements.
I'm not sure I can suggest anything that would make the image stronger, and appreciate your approach.

Well done sir!

Wow Great Photo! Im headed there this week actually. Hopefully that shot will work out for me as well. Did you happen to see any caves around there?

I know exactly how you feel about rushing to the laptop haha.

The shoot looks great to me. Maybe more of a long exposure on the water?

Enjoy the area William, look forward to seeing some results! I believe the water was around 30s earlier in the sunset, but a longer one later may be a bit smoother, with a little more light reflection from the town. Good luck!

Thanks Alan!

In a lot of my photos, I normally can't achieve a greater standard after when I first edited them. I think the excitement takes over and allows me to know what I want from an image.

In your case, I'm sure two years meant you gained a lot of knowledge of post-processing, so that may simply be the reason.

Lovely photo of a someone overshot place Chris, though the haloing needs fixing! Hope this helps.

Good catch Ethan, thanks!

always a nice shot to be had in ct my only gripes are easily fixed ones haloing from the sky you dropped in. burn from the lights is a bit strong other than that its a pretty scene.
you could pull a Elia Locardi and over process and color it but i like this natural look

Beside some haloing around sky edges generated in processing, maybe it's a bit too dark or too much contrast (I work on contrast only in midtones).
Fantastic location and capture!
