First time digital photo postprocessing...

Hi everybody,

I am new to the site and to photography in general. Recently started learning post processing techniques and edited my first photo. Please let me know what mistakes I made and what could be done differently. Thanks

Speaking only to the processing, I like texture in the clouds and that you went for a realistic look to the scene. For me, the light on the rocks is a little flat, so maybe a little burning may help. Given the direction of light / time of day though, probably can't go overboard with it. This may look good in B/W - have you tried that?

Thank you!
I have not tried B&W yet, will give it a shot.

I took a look at this before reading Robert's comments and am much in agreement.
If you are new to photography I applaud you on your sense of composition - the lighthouse is placed in a strong position in the frame, the horizon is level, there is interest in the sky, you have people providing scale etc - great job!
As Robert points out the lighting is a little flat (side effect of that interesting sky....). You could try (lightly) brushing in some highlights etc.
You could also try cropping a little from bottom & left, just far enough to remove the (uninteresting) gravel and people of the left of the frame.
Good luck - please follow up with any changes you feel work for you ( I agree that B&W conversion could be and interesting addition....)

just start watching a ton of youtube videos... it is a great resource and can get you going in the right direction there is a ton to learn but it will all drastically improve your results. everything from clarity, shadow detail, contrast, luminosity masking, fixing a sky in relation to the land. you name it there is a fix.

on your photo i like how you set up just the wrong time of day. also i hope you have a tripod as it would have bee a nice 2 shot pano gaining more of the ocean. you have some haloing going on around the light house which can be cured with a luminosity mask. keep at it the learning experience is well worth it and there are plenty of experienced shooters here to set you on the right path

haha thanks! I did start the youtube learning actually and it does help a lot. as for the time of day... it was a total "drive by" on my vacation to nova scotia so I had no choice.. also shot handheld:( I was trying to get rid of the halo for a while and could not get it for some reason.. need to learn more:) thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it

I agree with previous comments. One thing that immediately sticks out to me is that you raised the exposure in the area of the light house. You can see this because there is the side effect of a light haze around the lighthouse. This sort of stuff usually shows up when you highlight something with sky in the background. I catch myself missing this sort of stuff in my photos all the time.

This is a cool photo! I actually like the blues in the sky and water so I wouldn't make it black and white. Best of luck with future photos!
