Thorsten Westheider's picture

Sunset shades

This shot goes to show, that an utterly dull scene can be interesting if you wait for the right moment and if you manage not to clip any color channel, red in particular. I was curious if I could capture these many yellow and red shades and sure enough, it worked out.

EDIT: Converting to JPEG and uploading here cost a couple of shades...

i love that sunset but that is one ugly tree wasn't there a prettier one to pick lol. i have to learn more about settings as i would love to be able to get the full range of color rather than blowing out something or missing the bits of light that my eye sees. this is definitely something i would paint

Yup, that tree sucks, but it was the only one standing all by itself. The only purpose of this picture was to capture all the shades of color. I wasn't sure if those dim red tones could be preserved but they could. Sunrises and sunsets are prone to clipping the reds and for no apparent reason you then wonder in post where all that color has gone.

is it a technical issue with how the sensor responds to the red hues in recording the image its kind of weird how it seems to get the yellow blue green spectrum but red purple orange are weak i know i have taken plenty of sunrise/sunset shots and have been extremely disappointed going to relive that moment in excitement and been overwhelmingly disappointed and thought to myself that the scene i recorded was not even close to what my eyes saw

That is the challenge here indeed. There are 2 things that come into play here in my opinion, clipping of individual channels (red most of the time) and the Bayer matrix on the sensor that is biased towards green (RGGB type).

Are you shooting RAW or JPG? The most common reason a shot doesn't look like the scene itself is because you are either looking at a JPG which is the camera's version of a RAW edit, or you are looking a RAW file that hasn't been edited properly or at all. The color is usually there, but needs to be brought out with a decent edit.

i shoot raw i know thorsten does but for whatever reason i just can't seem to get it right i must not have the correct settings so i will have to experiment
