Mount Fuji Under the Stars

So, this year I decided to try out star trails for the first time, and while the theory behind how to do them was rather simple to grasp, the execution proved much more challenging. I'll hopefully be able to take what I've learned from this experience, and transform it into a solid image the next time I get a chance (probably next year, haha).

This image isn't quite what I would call portfolio worthy, at least I don't feel that way right now. However, it was more or less a practice shot to see if my gear could actually capture the stars in such a light polluted area. I was able to fix up most of the gaps and remove all of the planes in post... and were there ever a lot of planes flying over Mount Fuji, holy cow.

If anyone here has mastered star trails, I'd love to know any advance level tips, even with my 30 second image shooting automatically there seemed to be a large number of gaps between the stars.

Stacked using Starstax
About 110 stacked 30 second exposures.

Beautiful shot Jordan, will look forward to seeing the one you consider portfolio standard :)

Thanks! It took forever to salvage one, so it’s possible I’ll see this in a better light after taking some time away from it.

For a portfolio worthy shot I’d be hoping to get some more consistency in the stars (fewer gaps, more consistent brightness). I’ll have to look more into how to perfect these kinds of photos.

I am not an expert on astrophotography, but I think that you star trails did very well. Only the top of the mountain, those snow-covered parts, would light up fairly.
Maybe something like this ...

I like the added light in the top. I’ll play around with it a little more. I didn’t want to highlight it too much in fear of it looking too unnatural, but I think the way you did it makes it look lighter while keeping it believable.
As for the star trails, I’m not sure if these are good or not, to be honest I watched one YouTube video and looked at maybe 3 images, haha. I’m just basing how “good” they are based on what I had in my head, so it’s entirely possible my imagination went a little further than reality.

Thanks for your advice and compliments!
