I made this photo in Sydney harbour and just left it colour full but then I turned it to black and white. what do you think looks better and what would look better on the wall??
also critiques are welcome for overall images
It looks like you performed a straight conversion from color to B/W with no additional adjustments, which is a nice start. However, I would like to see some additional processing of the shadows / highlights because in the current state, the B/W version lacks the pop, that the color one provides.
I agree with Chris on the magenta cast - could well have been introduced by your ND filter.
I think that this is one of those images that could work either way.
For critique I'd say the exposure is good and you have done a good job of holding back the highlights.
I do find the image bottom-heavy through, and think if you crop from the bottom it would help balance the image better.
Both seem a little soft throughout to me - if a long exposure could this be due to wind/tripod vibration?
Hi Alan I didn't have a nd filter at all so I don't know what caused it to have so much magenta. this was shot when it was nearly pitch black but the light of the city lit it up. and yes it is a little soft because that night it was very windy.
I think I prefer the B&W, Jeremy, but each has its own appeal.
Now that I look at the colour image again next to the monochrome, I note that there seems to be an overall magenta cast to the colour one.
