I think unless you have something in the shot that explains the time of day (a streetlight or light coming from the window of a home, for example), it is impossible to tell these were taken at night. And since the subject is a snowy scene, to me it's important for the snow to be white. In the first image, the show and the tree are all shades of gray. The histogram has a tall lump in the middle-left with nothing in the right quarter. The second image has almost no blacks or white with the exception of the sky in the background.

Now, if either image had the aforementioned nighttime light source, then I would say the snow should be gray to black in the shadows while the snow nearest the light source would be white, of course.

I do think the compositions are interesting, they just need a bit of post work to pop. I really turned up the whites in the first to emphasize the snow and increased the contrast in the second to make the water look like it was shot at night, which it was. :)

great observations Phillip it was a stretch to think i could pull off something in nature at night i wanted to shoot an active quarry with all the lights but no trespassing of course.i will play with these in PS and see what i can do.
