The Apple Orchard

There is an apple orchard a few towns away from me. The trees are so interesting! They aren't shaped like any other trees due to years of heavy pruning and the painted trunks have huge structural appeal. And then, right before the the leaves pop, the branches turn red! How cool! I didn't have the right lens when I drove by there about a week ago. I am trying to get back with a wide lens so I can get a better image with the scope of the acres and acres of these trees. So, since I'll be heading back soon - thoughts about this or about shooting something like a vast orchard?

I would be interested to see how a wide angle turns out. How wide were you thinking. I love my 16-35, but at 16 you have to be really close to something like like the trees in order to keep the detail on them. And then, if you are that close, you lose the vastness of the surroundings. If you go back, take a couple of lenses and let us know how it goes!

will do!

The problem I've encountered using a really wide lens on this type of scene is the foreground needs to be extra close to the camera and everything beyond is drastically reduced in its relative size. I'm not saying it won't be worth it, but try a longer lens, too. You might be surprised at how it turns out. With a very long lens (>150mm), you'll get NOTHING but trees and some ground—the background trees will limit the amount of sky that shows through the branches.

Beautiful colors on this.
