A Great Egret Photo Session

I captured this Great Egret as it was hunting for food. The head is a little blurry. I should have cranked up the iso. Favs anyone?

2nd one, shows action

I know you were probably trying to isolate this one bird from its surroundings, but all the crops are a little too tight for me. I'd like to see just a little bit more of the scenery. Or maybe a lower camera would have allowed more of the background to be shown and might have had the same psychological effect as a wider crop.

Also, I don't know if the feathers on its back are blown out to pure white, but they are really close. It doesn't help that these were shot in what appears to be the middle of the day, which always gives very harsh lighting.

Of these, the fourth is my favorite, but my first objection still applies.

Hi Timothy,
First - Yea! Isn't it great when you get a heron that doesn't fly away immediately! You even got the elusive "fish in beak"! Well done.

I was about to type exactly what Phillip mentioned about the type crop when I read his. I'll just add that there is a composition concept which I'll call 'space to act'. What this means is that it works well from a composition standpoint to leave space for your subject to do the next thing it would do. Take a few steps, strike at a fish, gaze into the distance, whatever. Just give the subject the space to do the next action allows the viewer to finish the story in their own minds and creates another level of interest.

Overall though - thumbs up!
