Where She Said Yes

Valid criticism or even better, creative suggestions regarding printing, edits, ideas for next time, etc., are most welcome.
This is one of the photos I took on my wife and I's recent honeymoon to Cabo. We returned to the place, as the title suggests, where we got engaged. Full description in my profile.

Liking this one very much.

Hey Thomas! Nice work! I love the timing on your long exposure - not too much so you get a nice smoothing. I particularly like the composition of the rocks and waterfall. All really nice.

Where I would suggest a little playing around would be with light and luckily - you don't have to re-shoot for this! The issue I see in this image is that the light is coming from behind the rocks which results in a little bit of a flat look on the rock face. Also it make the trees appear too bright for a back ground object. Even though you would be introducing an entirely fake light source, I would create some side like from the right here and maybe darken the trees a touch. Here is a rough example from a screen capture. I just took a brush tool and lightened and warmed any rock facing right and then warmed the entire image a smidge.

This is just ideas. It is a really nice image to begin with! With best intentions..

:)

Like your edit, Ruth! Could you just move those rocks a bit while you're there?

Like your image - and your sentiment, Thomas! I think that it may be tilted a bit clockwise (~1.5 degrees?). Hard to see this with 10-stop filters in place, and camera virtual horizon is not accurate enough to rely on with water, which is always pretty well level, unless it's raging. So, I'd frame up and level, only then carefully putting on the filter. I'd have preferred the rocks positioned either left or right relative to where they are. That would improve the composition for me, and also allow a fuller portrayal of the waterfall's reflection, a nice touch in this image.

Funny Chris as my immediate impression was that the image is tilted also.It is certainly difficult to get right with a 10 stop blocking the view - I typically frame up using an external level and leave room for cropping/rotation (been bit before....)

I also agree with the rock position - I think if the shot was taken a few steps to the right it may have produced a more balanced image.

Hi Thomas - I agree with suggestions in general. The one thing I might change otherwise to suit my own personal taste is the lower the saturation/intensity of the sky. Being such a vivid blue it draws my attention away from the waterfall and out the image.
The light patch of water on the right could also be removed if you wanted to be picky.

You have done wonderful work on this, and at the end of the day the goal should be to reflect the emotional connection you have to that place (ie process to preserve your own memories, not to satisfy the taste of others).

I do agree about the sky; also it has an odd cyan cast. However, I like that sunlit (?) patch at the edge! It hints to me at something more.

Totally agree - I think with the sky toned down this would draw you through the frame and be a good anchor.

Agreed!
