Dillon Murphy's picture

Stark Tree in the White Mountains

I consider this to be one of the better pictures I have taken up to this point, I would love some feedback and even re-editing tips. The colors in this image are pretty close to what I actually saw, or at least conveys the feelings from this sunset, looking away from the setting sun.

You do convey the dusk feel fairly well. One thing I notice is the coagulation of the clouds in the post processing. You notice that prominently just above the roght-top end of the branch. Perhaps, it's due to applying sharpening to clouds.

Thanks, you are referring to the clouds on the top of the image about the right third? I'll take another look at it!

A pleasing image, Dillon! I really can't see what it is about the clouds that troubles Ray; to me, the variation in the clouds looks like natural variation, and is part of the appeal of the scene for me.

Two minor points: there is a bit of a processing-induced halo above the dark treeline in the middle distance, below the distant mountains, and secondly the leftmost branch on the tree is a little too close to the boundary in an otherwise harmonious composition. I think I'd have liked to step back a little, and show the very bottom of the tree as well, clear of the bottom margin. Personally, I'd knock back that colour a bit - but you were there!

That's great feedback, I pulled up the image last night to look at the clouds, I hasn't introduced any sharpening, I was looking at the other pictures I took around this one and now that I can edit better those will look good. The color in the clouds really was amazing. A good amount of it comes through even without any editing, cutting the magenta saturation just a touch might help it out though like you said!
