Dylan Zoebelein's picture

Mount St. Helen's view of Mt. Rainier from the summit

I'd love to here what people think of this photo. Still trying to get better at my landscape photography.

Hi Dylan, this is a nice image with lots of potential. I think the balance between land and sky is good, and there's just enough detail in the sky to support the image.

The one thing I cannot get over though is the magenta cast - both snow and clouds are pink. I think if you correct that the image will be much stronger.

You might want to try converting a copy to B&W also, as this raises further options.

Well done, and kudos for being there in the first place!

Echoing Alan's sentiments for reaching the summit, man - really awesome. This is one of those scenes that was probably unmatched and amazingly grand in person, but doesn't necessarily translate as well in a single photo. Nevertheless, it's clear that you're high up, so all good.

Given the perspective, I would keep to color with your edit, because B/W kind of mushes everything together at least for me.

Like Chris said - you were there. Process based on how you remember it and in a way that produces a photo which captures how the real-life scene made you feel.

I agree with Alan; the color cast is very distracting. I also think you could lose a little off the top of the image to tighten up the composition a bit.

I did a quick conversion to B&W to see how it might look. With a little more time, it could be a very nice photo. (I also added a small crop to this edit.)

I like the black and white conversion to the image. I do agree with what you and Alan were saying. I'll take a stab at those adjustments.

The others have said it well, Dylan. The image has potential, and Phillip's monochrome shows one possibility.

There is something quite peculiar about the colour here; this image stands out in your portfolio in this regard.

To illustrate, I've adjusted it as best I could in this edit, and can't quite get it to look right. The rock has a reddish cast still - you were there, so you know if that's how it is in reality

Color is one of the more challenging things for me since I am red/green colorblind. I'll see if a BW conversion would work, similar to what Philllip did.
