Shawn Mahan's picture

Clogher Head, Dingle Peninsula, Ireland

I really liked this viewpoint and we were lucky enough to have great weather when we stopped. Too windy for a tripod, so I had to just take a ton of pictures and hope I didn't get too much camera blur. After being in Ireland a week, I can say hats off to those who post up all those really nice colorful pictures as I know it must take a lot of patience!

Good shot. I prefer the color rendition with its strong vibrancy.
I seldom use a tripod and never lock up mirror. Sometimes I use my wife as a wind block.

lol...I owe my wife enough as it is! :)

I prefer the composition of the second, but you can do much better with the B&W conversion. That sky screams for a red filter:

This has changed the story of this image. very good.

@ Philip, how to use colored filters in LR? thanks.

I haven’t used Lightroom in years, so I’m not familiar with the workflow. The conversion I made was with Silver Efex Pro, which is a free app and probably the best app for black and white conversions.

Ok. Thanks.

Vijay, there are light room presets available from the left panel. If you are using a newer version, it may only be showing a B&W group with filters listed such as landscape, Punch, ect. If you go to the top of that panel and use the pull down that is close the + sign, you can add and remove different presets. Select the one that say Classic - B&W filter. Under that selection you will see classic Red, Blue, Green, ect. I will say, you are not going to get the awesome results that Phillip and his mad skills has. Below are two lightroom filters as applied. The first is the classic red filter. The second is their newer filter called Landscape.

@ Shawn Mahan. Thank you very much for your support. will dig in more from your lead.
cheeers.

Thanks Phillip. I used a pretty light touch on this one. For the B&W I only messed with the blues in the mixer. I will play around and repost a different edit to see if I can match your rendition.

Edit: Phillip I tried my had at recreating that awesome black sky in Lightroom. I think I got close, but I will need to keep practicing to get a nice result like that. For this edit I had to use a combination of a grad filter on the sky (pulled down exposure and pushed temp towards blue), used the BW mixer to pull down the blue, aqua and green hue, pulled the blacks down, pushed the whites up, tweaked highlights and dehazed. All that and I didn't really think it was close until I boosted the contrast. I am proud of the fact that really didn't take me but a few minutes, so at least I am gaining edit skills!

What do you think? I just couldn't get that black sky without getting halo's on the cliff edges at the sky line.

Yes! Better!

Hi Shawn! I am also fond of the first ... until I saw Phillips suggestion. Now that is awesome!

Art directors don’t change mind based on others and they only look at pics for a sec or 2 to make their decision.. FYI in case you are trying to be an art director.
But Women do change mind often.

Nope! Just an appreciator!

I like the color rendition, but I think there is too much of the uninteresting foreground.

Nice crop suggestion

Thanks ray. I was debating about cropping off the lower portion and trying to move the water line to the 1/3 proportion rule. I brown grass really doesn't do much for the picture. I should have moved up closer to the edge.

Just not TOO close. We've had people fall into the Grand Canyon recently because they weren't careful.

The edges there overhang deep wash outs. I was afraid to get within 10 feet. No signs either!
