Hi All. I am new to the Fstoppers forum. I spent 15 years shooting free fall skydiving, 5 years shooting weddings and portraits, and finally came to the horrible conclusion that I really don't like working with people. Terrible, right? Maybe I just matured enough to admit it. I just started shooting again after about 4 years of inactivity and have focused the past 2 weeks on landscape. I have always shot pictures of places, but never concentrated on landscape photography and post processes for it. That being said, I would love any feedback or critique to help this landscape newbie grow. In my mind I am unsure how far to take adjustments or if I am taking them too far, not far enough. I have attached a few for your critique. Thanks for looking!
Very nice shots indeed. I envy your composition skills. I wish I could critique more but the only thing I do not find pleasing is that the first one appears a little over juiced especially on the clouds. The rest are stunning.
I totally agree on the "over juiced". I love that word! I have only been working with landscapes for about 2 weeks so am still struggling with how far to take it. With portraits it's easy to know how far is too far by the skin tones. Thanks for the comments!!
Welcome Brian! Nice work! There are too many to critique all of them and so I'm going to stick to my two favorites.
The first image has great lines. I like the strong blocks of color. I even like the off-centered vanishing point. I wish the top of the tall roadside tree didnt get lost in the dark cloud but that is minor and picky. I do agree with Reed that the clouds on the left could have the blacks pulled back a litle. They make this half of the image much darker than the other. Still my second favorite.
The third image is my favorite. It is nicely balanced. I love the heavy blue/black colors. I also think that the darkness overall creates an almost abstract look that appeals to me. This is really nice piece of work!
I look forward to seeing more Brian!
Thank you very much for the critique. The train was actually my first attempt at landscape on a serious level. It kicked off my photo a day project. I agree with the first image. The blacks are a little heavy in the clouds. I was going for moody. I think I achieved angry LOL
Funny! The are all nice. The train one looks better on my work computer which has a larger monitor. Nice vanishing point on this one too.
