Shawn Mahan's picture

Along the Irish Coast

We definitely had all types of weather driving around for a week. It was windy and overcast so I squatted down out of the wind and braced as much as I could. This is a stack of 3 using Photomatix to merge. I like the clouds agains the rocks in this one. What do you guys think? Feedback is welcome.

I like the composition, with those lines plunging into the scene, and the sense of drama, Shawn. Were you focus-stacking? To my eye, it looks somehow... processed. The dark rocks centre right a bit too dark...? Hard to place, but something's not quite right, for me.

Many would love what you've done, with its drama, though. It looks a bit like an engraving, rather than a photo. An engraving representing someone's 19th century Grand Tour to the sublime wilderness!

Sorry Chris, exposure stacking - HDR. So it is heavily processed and why there is a bit ghosting in the picture.

I can move the black point on this and maybe brighten those rocks up a bit.

Hi Shawn,

I'm not seeing what Chris it seeing here. The darkness of the landscape as your eye travels into the image works for me or else it would be too 'texture-y" My only issue with the image is that it is too heavy on the mid/dark tones. Where I would do a little tweaking would be to lighten the sky by pulling back on the blacks (rather than increasing exposure) being careful not to blow out that one bright section of sky. Then you would have nice dark tones in the land, mids in the water and lighter tones in the sky.

Maybe I'm off base so here a stab to show what I'm thinking.

Thanks Ruth! I can definitely lighten up the picture. I was pushing the boundary on over processing to get the dark and brooding sky. The preset I started with was pretty dark, I had already pulled up some of the mid tones!

Only if it meets your goals! The photograph is beautiful either way. Just my opinion that it would look more balanced.
