When the Water Goes Down

The Reservoir is something we needed to support growth but it doesn't make the habitat loss any easier to swallow. Normally, much of the old land in under water so you don't see the destruction. But, when the water goes down, the story can't be avoided.

This is what I was telling Joe Cole about.

Love this shot and the colors!

Surprised you like the colours, Joe! I find them almost repellent.

PS - this is pretty true to life for this area in winter. Note the ice on the water.

I believe it, Ruth - but yuk! ;-)

Ruth nailed a wonderful capture here, even though the colors are muted, I find the color 'palette' beautiful. This piece almost has a cinematic feel to it for me, probably from the coolness part of it.

Even though the overall has a desaturated tone (which helps strengthen the image's character), I love the balance between the cool and the warm. There's almost a 50/50 split, and both compliment one another quite well. My only nitpick if there was one would be the sky. I just wish there was just a subtle touch more of blue there (even if there was just a few openings showing the sky) to complete the nice pattern there is here. The pattern I'm referring to is (from bottom to top) warm, cool, warm, and finally cool again if there was a bit more cool tone in the sky.

Thanks Joe. I'll take a look at the sky. I do get where Chris is coming from. Its not a "pretty" picture by any means. I do think it is impressive though. I was thinking of heading over there today. The water is still high but it is always interesting!

Well, I don’t think you need to fix anything, but that is up to you. I personally do think it is a great shot, I wouldn’t say pretty as that doesn’t apply. As for Chris, I agree with him on many subjects and discussions, just not this time, BW for me would lose that wonderful color palette. I do think BW would look good, but I prefer this as is.

Looking foward to the 3 of us getting over there.

Was this shot taken just recently? Are there certain times when the water level gets down to this level? Or is it just luck o' the draw?

No and yes. Last year. We need to go when we haven't had so much rain. I am watching it. As soon as we can walk out onto areas like this one, i will let you know.

Every year I say I'm gonna bring the camera out when the levels are this low, but it always seems i'm elsewhere when it happens.

I'm no B&W purist, Ruth, but surely this calls for it. The colours are so cold and lifeless - unless you want to make an environmental statement, which is fine in itself.

Well - I usually say that a photo that generates a strong reaction is successful - and this one seems to have done that! I was thinking of this in a journalistic style with death and destruction at the forefront. This area can be quite beautiful but beauty wasn't the goal. That said, I do get the feedback suggesting black and white! I always appreciate your thoughts Chris!
