Hajnalka Berényi-Kiss's picture

Feedback welcome

Hi everyone,

This image is one of my absolute favourites from last autumn, but I've not received any rating on it yet so I'm wondering whether it's not as interesting / attractive as I perceive it. Would love to hear your opinion. Thanks a lot!

Hi Hajnalka! This is indeed a beautiful image. I always hesitate to give feedback when someone says that the image is a favorite because I don't want to hurt the love you have for the image by pointing out something I think is an issue. My opinion or your work should not be as important as your own! Since you seem interested though, I'll share this thought.

If I could give any feedback that might help it would be that I think this is a mixed-goal image. Landscapes are, like this, in full focus. By introducing such a strong foreground element, this turned into a different type of photo, let's call it a 'tree photo' for conversation. If your goal is a landscape, the tree is in the way. If your goal was the tree, there isn't enough depth of field to separate it from the background and really highlight it. If you want to have a 'combo' image, I would have stepped to the side and had the tree be an accent element at the side of the view of the mountains.

I hope this makes sense. Again, just my opinion and given with the intention of helping!

:)

Ruth gave some good feedback. Id say you mostly have some compositional adjustments to make here as the mountain and tree seem to be competing, even though the focus hit is on the tree. My eye seems to be having a hard time deciding where to look. I think for this to work as it is the tree would have to have less branches allowing the tree trunk to act as a prominent leading line.

That being said I can see why you like this shot, it is a striking location with great colors. Nice job overall.

I echo Ruth and Francisco's comments. This is a VERY busy scene. Without the tree would be fantastic. I find myself trying to look around the tree to see the detail in the water. My personal opinion.

This is a masterful piece of art. The yellow leaves contrast nicely against the water. It's definitely very professional work.
