I missed the contest

But I’m really looking for feedback, not just a score. Photography is a relatively new hobby, only been at it for a couple years, and I’m just starting to work on my post processing skills. The first image is the ‘final’ and the second two were the source. And the final was a more subdued color edit from before I got the idea for the composite. I’m curious to see if the more experienced community thinks my composite is seamless to the trained eye, and if I went too far with the light and color editing. Thanks for looking!

Any notes on the composition are welcome too. I would have liked the pilings of the old pier to stay below the shoreline for separation but couldn’t get high enough.

Very nice work. Your compositing skills look decent. The composition is nice and shows thought with the boat resting on the righthand third of the image. I would add that the sky might be a little too distracting. Perhaps, try to composite a different sky to match the somber mood that the rest of the image has. I know from experience that dealing with orange hues at dusk or dawn can be difficult to work with, but you managed well.

Thanks!

Hi Chris - I prefer the top image. The sky is a tiny bit blown out in the center bright spot but that happens. I also agree about the pier blending into the shoreline. Next time you have a horizon issue where you can't get high enough, try going low. Many photographers forget that you can break the horizon in either direction. I think if you have a chance to reshoot, you would love the layering and depth you would get if the pier was above the shoreline - even if you have to lie down on the ground to get this.

Nice work overall though!

Thank you, I agree about the bright spot. Seeing it next to the unprocessed images really makes it stick out. I’m just now experimenting with masks and I think I might try one over the spot if I redo the image. Good idea with going low, too. I might be able to pull that off next time.
