Ian Fraser's picture

local giant

I just discovered this Massive 40 foot high falls about a mile away from my home. I got this shot but would love some critique or suggestions on how to shot this. this waterfall leads right into the gully's wall. It has a lot of color around it and a good amount of shade up top.

Personally I love the shot the only thing you might want to try is getting wet and getting into it from multiple angles see if there’s any foreground interest that can be applied. obviously could wait for a decent night for sunset or go early morning for sunrise see if you can get any good cloud action just amp it up a little bit, other than that you’re pretty lucky to have something so nice so close

it was knee deep where i was standing, its a little tight at this spot but its got a lot going for it.

I like the way the dappled light reflects off the wet rocks on either side of the falls. I just wish the light was softer throughout the image (to brighten the shadows a bit). If I lived close to this spot, I'd be there every week and in every weather condition. :)

Ditto! I've been thinking about doing an "every day for a year" project and have been looking for something nearby that would have year round interest and change. This would be awesome! I'm I'm jealous!

Like Joe also said, I'd just play with angles and lighting to see what you get. I'd definitely go in the water if it is shallow. Hey - did you hear that scream? That's my honey who just read this and had a flash of me doing something awesome (ie stupid) with one of our lenses. Tee hee.

If that was close to me, I would probably never leave there. I like the angle and if you can get there for different lights that would be great but if the trees filter out to much light, you can always reduce the shadows a smidge in post.

Beautiful shot! Love the LE.
I would shoot a little wider and include a foreground element such as a rock, tree, leaves to give it more context. Try to go back at a different time (early morning perhaps) to get a nice warm light.
An interesting perspective if possible would be from the water itself in the middle, shot super low (but not sure how deep the water is)
