Ruth Carll's picture

Heron

I took these in strong side light but everything around them was in shade. For the first one, I loved his pose but the rest of the image was really drab and the second bird I couldn't get a clear shot of through the tree branches that I was creeping around in. :) For the second shot I got a brief chance to catch the second bird but the shadows were off so I went with black and white. I don't know about this one and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Feedback always welcome.

Nature's so uncooperative! Unfortunately, Ruth, for me that branch kills the image of the left bird. I'd be tempted just to salvage the profile of the other one, and go "arty" with that i.e. rather than photographically literal.

I hear you! Check out #3!

NOW you're talkin'! Cool. And "arty".

(You're still getting ghosts in your blacks, Ruth.)

Arggggg - any chance for a screen capture with them circled?

I've raised the shadow levels. Ideally it'd all still be black where you want black. I think it's your monitor, Ruth, that prevents your seeing the fact that the "blacks" are not black.

WildLife is Hit or Miss .. So is posting anything on this site !!

Nice...I am still sitting here laughing at your comment!

This site draws out those with knives.

Eye catching images and the one on the middle is most interesting. Heron theater I imagine 😀

I like the first one in color.

Beautiful!

Here white herons are called "egrets".
I see nothing wrong with the branch in front of the left hand bird since that is what happens in nature.

Wow, great pictures. You really know how to isolate a subject. Of all three, I like the first the most, and actually think it would look great in black and white.

Love the first one! I prefer the color. I think the first shot would look better with a square crop. GOOD JOB!!

Thanks to all for the support and feedback!!

I (especially) love the first image, and the way the curves of branch and bird interact. I think the small splash of color really draws the eye in and makes the image pop.
I've included a crop (as suggested elsewhere) for reference, but prefer the use of negative space for balance in your original

The first is my favorite. The touch of color and minimalist effect makes an exceptional photo. Keep the negative space!

Great pics! I also like the first one best and would keep the color and negative space.
