Beams of Heaven

I am new to Fstoppers community groups but I am inspired by some of the outstanding photographs that are shared. I am an amateur and this was with the first serious camera I have had. The photograph is of the Lemaire Channel in Antarctica. Antarctica, is perhaps one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Frankly you don't need to be really good to take a nice photograph over there.

This is really interesting

This scene presents some real challenges for any photographer. The contrast between the backlit clouds and the unlighted sides of the mountains is just a little too much for your camera to handle and the highlights are completely blown out. I suspect this was shot as a JPEG, but even a RAW original would have difficulty capturing the dynamic range at work here.

Also, it looks like you might have pushed the Structure in the shadows a little further than they can handle as there appears to be some “HDR halos” around the local contrast on the mountains. Some people like that look, but I do not. It’s only my opinion, though, so if that’s the look you were going for, you nailed it.

As a scene to witness, it looks amazing. The opening in the clouds looks like the roof of a cave with everything inside in darkness.

Thank you very much for your comments - I was on a ship and it was moving at about 10 knots - The clouds were moving in the opposite direction - the Sun broke through for about 3 quick shots. The best I could do - no chance to frame or even think. Yes Shot in Jpeg with Canon T3 - my first camera
