Rémi Carbonaro's picture

Desolation.

A sunrise over the Elqui Valley, Chile. A night hike on a sandy "path" was rewarded with this almost martian view. Fourteen pictures were stitched together to get this panorama, while the sun struggled to rise past the surrounding mountains.

300mm, f/5.6, 1/125s, ISO 100.

Desolation indeed, Rémi. You convey that sense well. I agree with you that in this case the slightly washed-out sky adds to that effect. I note that you frequently seem to have a particular, often painterly, effect in mind with your images. Out of curiosity, why not just shoot with a wider lens? Aiming for resolution?

First off, thank you !
I tend to like using a telephoto lens to shoot landscapes. I found it gives things a scale, a drama that I have a hard time reproducing with a wider lens (I do own a 24-70, which is not that wide for an APS-C, but still), and I aim to compensate the short field of vision by stitching panoramas. It allows me to work with a lot more data and to keep a nice resolution when I work in more uncommon cropping ratios, such as 64/27, that I use a lot (including here).
