I wonder if nature takes into account that they need to leave some behind or they won't get any future breeding. Our local heron seems to always leave one duckling to mature.
It could be. I notice that one chick always follows her mother's commands better than others - I attributed survival to that discipline - I saw similar behavior in bears in British Columbia
