Ray Zee's picture

Is this image dead on arrival?

At the time, I thought I could make this scenery work, but after loading to the computer I can't make this image good.
I would like to know how you would salvage this image if it is possible at all.

It's a tough one for sure. hum.. Perhaps a horizontal crop of only, either, the yellow tree on the right including some of the foreground tree as framing... or the yellow tree on the left using the stone on the bottom to help framing. Perhaps even just isolate the rock at the bottom, there are some nice greens and blues in there (rock itself) with a 16:9 ratio?

I know the feeling though. I take a shot thinking it was wonderful only to load it on the computer and then I'm stumped at what the main focus is/was.

My main focus was the yellow on the left, and I was hoping to frame it with the rock and the bendy tree. But I think, it simply doesn't work.

It's a pickle for sure. Perhaps something like this for the left? It's a tough one for sure.

I think this is actually workable. I think getting higher and using a longer zoom will help.

. Thanks for the suggestion.

I would go for something like this, maybe even tighter:

I kinda like the way the tree winds and twists. Maybe you could crop away the rest and do something with that?

Interesting with the tree dividing the two sides, and going for b/w, adds mood. Doing something like this makes the background less important as we are purely looking at positive and negative space.. I think you're onto something.

Just playing around with a few ideas using that theme...

yeah, next time I visit the site, I'll try to make the twisty tree the main focus, and expose to it. Thanks

I think that trunk is so dark and dominating, it sort of shuts down everything else for me.. Perhaps a monochrome of just it?

This is what I came up with before reading any other posts! We all seem to have a similar reaction. And I don't do much mono. Rather than showing "just" the trunk, on reflection I thought it could embrace that background shrub, and complement the boulder. And I thought more of its texture and form, rather than the silhouette alone, could be brought out.

I like this one the best thus far
