Sunset at Trolltunga, Norway

To get to the famous Trolltunga rock formation in Norway, we had to walk 14km of trail (28km round trip). We decided to camp there to enjoy the place and be able to photograph both sunset and sunrise. In the summer the sun sets very late. As it was late, no other tourists were there, so my wife (who appears sitting on the edge of the rock) and I had enough time to get the picture the way we had planned.

Trolltunga is a very famous rock in Norway, but the vast majority of photos are taken from a higher angle (where the photographer is higher than the rock formation), I managed to climb many meters down the rock slope to be able to take this picture of a lower and unusual angle.

great shot I love it

Love the composition and the stunning location.

Amazing composition! Love it. Just feel like the edit isn't showcasing the amazing colours- heres a very quick edit. Just pumped the saturation and contrast, and fiddled with the yellow, red and orange HSL sliders in Lightroom.

You have a point, Sophie, but for my tastes you've overcooked it a bit. Still, it's all very personal, so no criticism intended, just an observation.

This edit is way way over saturated. You've lost detail in the shadows and color areas.

Was a very quick edit just on my phone :)

Hi there. Both the light edits are part of my learning curve. for me, Sophie's edit adds to Grandure of the location, scale and importance as described. Cheers.

I agree, and I also like both edits. I kind of agree with Chris, and I might pull the color back a bit, but only a bit. I think Sophie has definitely increased the grandeur, as you say. But all very subjective. I am also just learning about editing, and one aspect that always amazes me is how a single image can appear so completely different under different editing choices. All while still being totally acceptable as an "accurate" photograph.

In any case, really great image. And what a location!

Great image. And, you people are insane! :)

I'm sure you mean that in the NICEST way! ;-)

With all these comments on comments, it's worth saying to the original poster: great image, Guilherme! I like it just as you've posted it, on reflection. The muted colours emphasise the starkness of the rocky landscape. Better to underdo than overdo saturation any day - at least for me.

What a stunning photo!

Just checked your profile, Jason. Welcome to Fstoppers. I think you'll find this a friendly and stimulating site. BTW you probably have a smart phone. In that case you have a perfectly adequate camera to post here. Not that I'd discourage you from getting "proper equipment", but gear-freaking is a real risk, especially for us guys. Some of my best images were taken with my "worst" lenses.
I've done a beautiful print of a friend's photo made with an iPhone 5 in A3 size for her.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Chris. I am enjoying the site thus far and is very stimulating. You are correct, just shooting with a smart phone for now, trying to learn more about lighting, angles, composition, etc. In no rush to invest in better equipment, at least not just yet. Just starting the journey and so much to learn. Thanks again!

Love this! What would it look like if you accentuated with colder bluish or purplish tones to bring out the iciness?

Well, you know what I think (LOL):

I also added a slight crop to remove the edge of the mountain on the left side of the image. I think this makes the ledge seem more like it's the highest part of the scene. "Top o' the world, ma!"
